You can’t control a lot of what happens in your life, but you can control how you respond to it; that’s the message Leah Mether wants people to hear.

The mother of three and business owner will share her personal story at a seminar in Moe on Sunday 23 October titled ‘Remove the Roadblocks: Reach your goals. Be happy. Live healthy.’

Described as a “warts-and-all, honest, confronting and motivating” healthy mind, healthy body seminar, Ms Mether said she was inspired to tell her story to help others remove the roadblocks in their lives.

“It’s not the challenges you face, but how you respond to them that’s important,” Ms Mether said.

By speaking openly and honestly about her own challenges – including caring for her husband as he battled chronic pain and depression following a car accident, facing her personal health issues, and experiencing the ups and downs of weight extremes – Ms Mether said she hoped people would see they could also take control of their health and happiness, and achieve their goals in life, despite the roadblocks.

“People see that I’m fit and healthy now, and assume I always have been. They assume everything is perfect in my life and achieving my personal and professional goals is easy. It’s not. Just like everyone, I have my own challenges to face, no more or less than most,” Ms Mether said.

“Too often we only see the exterior of a person’s life. We fall into the trap of assuming everyone else has it easy and we’re the only one with challenges. We start making excuses as to why we can’t do the things we say we want to – whether it’s lose weight, get fit or write a book – and it holds us back. The biggest roadblock to achieving health, happiness and our goals is usually ourselves.”

Ms Mether said she had been 30kg heavier and 10kg lighter than she was now and at both extremes was unhappy and unhealthy – physically and mentally.

“Now, with three little kids, my own business, and lots of voluntary commitments, I’m the fittest, strongest, healthiest, and most importantly happiest, I’ve ever been.

“I decided to choose happiness and health, and stopped listening to my excuses. It didn’t just magically happen; it’s a choice I made and continue to make. It involves prioritising, planning, creating habits, setting goals, and recognising that life is not a practice run – this is it.”

‘Remove the Roadblocks: Reach your goals. Be happy. Live healthy.’ is being held at Moe Service Centre, 1-29 George Street, Moe on Sunday 23 October from 2pm-4:30pm.
