The storm is intensifying - here's how to stay steady

  —  20/03/25

With an election year upon us in Australia and global politics more unpredictable than ever, decisions are increasingly being shaped by political agendas.

Priorities are shifting, tensions are rising, and what once felt steady now feels uncertain. Many people are feeling unsettled by forces beyond their control, and conversations are becoming more polarised and personal. I hear it all the time:

“Everything feels so volatile.”
“It’s all politics now.”
“People are so polarised.”
“I don’t know what’s coming next.”

If you’re feeling this way, you’re not alone. But while we can’t always control what’s happening around us, we can control how we respond. And that’s where self-leadership comes in.

Steadying yourself in uncertain times

When the world around you feels unstable, your ability to manage your mindset, emotions, and reactions becomes your anchor. Here are five practical ways to stay steady:

  • Control and influence what you can, accept or let go of what you can’t. It’s easy to fixate on things outside your control or influence, but that only fuels frustration and anxiety. Focus on what’s within your power: your actions, your reactions, how you communicate, and the conversations you choose to engage in.

  • Regulate your behaviour. Feeling frustrated or anxious is normal, but emotions don’t have to dictate your actions. Take a breath. Create space between your reaction and your response. A considered approach helps you navigate uncertainty more effectively.

  • Stay informed, but don’t get caught up in the noise. Election years bring endless speculation and spin. Be selective with the information you consume - and mindful of avoiding echo chambers. Seek facts, not fear-mongering.

  • Clarify your values and priorities. When external circumstances feel unstable, your internal compass matters more than ever. What do you stand for? What will you prioritise, no matter what’s happening around you?

  • Take action, even when the path isn’t clear. Uncertainty can lead to paralysis, but inaction only feeds anxiety. If your organisation is restructuring or your job feels uncertain, talk to your leader, update your resume, or strengthen your network. Small steps won't fix everything, but they'll help you focus on what's within your control and keep you moving forward.

Leadership starts with you

Whether you’re leading a team, supporting your family, or simply trying to keep yourself on track, how you show up in uncertain times matters. Your steadiness reassures others. Your ability to stay calm, communicate clearly, and act with integrity sets the tone.

Uncertainty will always be part of life and work, but you always have a choice about how you respond.
