What would I do if I wasn’t afraid?
It’s a question I ask myself often.
It’s a question I want you to ask yourself now.
Think about it and write down your answers.
Would you apply for that job? Put your hand up for that leadership role? Go back to university? Follow your passion? Try that physical challenge? Ask that person out?
Take a long hard look at your list and recognise the only thing holding you back from doing those things is fear.
Then give yourself a stern talking to.
To quote Strictly Ballroom, “A life lived in fear is a life half lived”.
Don’t get to old age (if you’re lucky) with regrets, knowing you were the biggest roadblock to your success.
Even though you’re afraid, do those things on your list anyway. Take action. Just start. Yes, it might be uncomfortable, but the most worthwhile things often are because they push us outside our comfort zone.
“What if I fail?” that little voice of self-doubt whispers in your ear.
So what? Who cares! At least you tried and won’t die wondering ‘what if’. Try again. Learn from your failure and persist.
It doesn’t take confidence, it just takes courage.
